To make a relationship work, there are some non-negotiables most people miss. When these are missing, the relationship usually struggles or falls apart.
1. Both people truly want it
Both sides have to genuinely want the relationship to work. A lot of relationships fail because one person is never fully in and thinks they can do better.
2. Both people genuinely like each other
You should enjoy being around each other most of the time. Not every second, but for the most part, the relationship should feel good.
3. Trust
Both people need to fully trust each other. There cannot be constant doubt, suspicion, or insecurity. Even if the other person has done nothing wrong, insecurity alone can damage trust.
4. No negativity
No attacking, blaming, sarcasm, passive-aggressive behavior, silent treatment, or mean jokes. Both people need to be aware of their insecurities and not let them control the relationship.
5. Both people are happy on their own
A relationship should not be two unhappy people trying to fix themselves through each other. If someone is constantly sad, anxious, or empty alone, they often put too much pressure on their partner.
6. Communication
Both people need to know how to communicate clearly and calmly. They need to be able to express what they feel, what they think, and what they need. Emotional control matters a lot here.
7. No ego
There is no room for pride, stubbornness, or always needing to be right. Humility is necessary. When both people love each other and want the same outcome, they stop fighting to win.
8. Forgiveness and unconditional love
Sometimes things go wrong. People make mistakes. There has to be forgiveness. There also has to be a deep kind of love, similar to the love people often have for their children. That kind of love is rare, but it matters.
9. Respect
Respect is extremely important and very fragile. Once respect is broken, it is very hard to rebuild.
10. Same goals
Both people need to want the same kind of future. That includes things like kids, lifestyle, living situation, direction, and long-term plans. Without shared goals, the relationship eventually pulls apart.
A strong relationship is not built on feelings alone. It is built on trust, respect, communication, emotional control, and two people who truly want the same thing.
